Excellent TOEIC Score

One of the students who took our last TOEIC course recieved their test results last week and received the excellent score of 960. They said that our TOEIC course with Sam teaching was a great help to them and that it helped them to get this score.
Our TOEIC course is a a two week course to prepare students for what to expect in the the test and lots of handy exams tips and techniques.
The TOEIC course has a maximum score of 990, so our student's score was almost perfect. We offer our congratulations to her.
The next TOEIC course starts next week, with the next public test on the 5th of August, we hope we can achieve the same excellent results again.

Here is Alison teaching in the new green room. Alison has now moved to Melbourne to a new job and we wish her the best of luck there.

As you can see the new campus is larger and also very light.

JET english College will be closing for a break over Christmas, we will be open until Christmas Eve and then will be closed the following week. We open again on the 4th of January after the public holiday for new years day.

During this time there will be some renovations done to the campus to improve it for the students.

We hope that evryone has a good time over the festive season.

New Premises!

JET English College has moved to new premises on George St. We are now located on level one of 552 George St. This new location is very convenient as it is directly outside Town Hall Station.
The move has been completed and we are just settling in to our new building which is larger and more spacious than our campus on Castlereagh St. We are going to be making further renovations in the future, so watch this space to see the changes. The classrooms are large and airy and we will continue to provide a great fun place to study English.
As well as this we have some new teachers which I will introduce you too in another post soon. So this is a period of exciting change for JET. We are always trying to improve your experince studying and hope to see you at our new campus soon.

Here are some dates for the TOEIC Course and test.
As you know, JET English College is an authorised TOEIC test centre, so we run the public tests once or twice a month.
Before each test we have a TOEIC Course to help people to prepare for the exam.
Our TOEIC Course includes practice tests and preparation with what to expect in the exam as well as help with how to understand the exam and how to answer. A lot of people like to get used to the place where they will be taking the test as well so that it is not as nerve wracking on the day and it gives them the best chance that they have to do well in the test.

New class style for JET

Improve your English with our new and improved classes.
We have been teaching with the Callan Method at Jet English College now for four years, and we have decided to change the format of our third hour lesson. Until now this lesson has been a revision hour to help students catch up with any work that they might have missed, or to give them a chance to practice material that they had already studied.
With the Callan Method normally the teacher asks a question twice and then helps the student with the answer so that the student is speaking without thinking, but we have decided to make the student work a little bit harder and make their own answers to the Callan Method questions. We also give the students words and ask them to make a sentence with them.
Of course, the teacher is ready to help and correct the students as much as they need and the classes are still fast moving and fun.
One of our students said. "I really look forward to the third hour class now because it is very difficult for me, but I think that it will really improve my English.
At JET English College we are always trying to make our school a better place for studying and this development is an exciting one for us.

The Callan Method and the Cambridge Examinations

The Callan Method and the Cambridge Examinations.

The Callan Method is very good for getting students through the Cambridge examinations because they are very closely connected. If you look on the back f any Callan Method book you will see that they mention the Cambridge exams and the fact that they say that you can reach the level of the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) in a quarter of the time that it takes with other methods.
Since the Callan Method was introduced the Callan Method Organisation has used the FCE as a way of measuring the effectiveness of the method by seeing how long it took students studying with the method to reach the standard required.
The Cambridge exam also influenced how the method was written, and which words were included in the method and which words were left out.
English has a huge vocabulary of nearly half a million words, but most native speakers only use a very small percentage of these words in their everyday conversations. We have many words which are used very rarely and some almost not at all.
The Callan Method teaches the most commonly used words in the English language, they were chosen from the Cambridge English Lexicon and Michael West’s ‘General Service List of English Words’. These books show which words are most commonly used in the language, and so which are the best words to study to get through the examinations.
With the vocabulary and grammar taught in The Callan Method the student should be able to pass the Cambridge examinations because they know and understand the vocabulary needed because of all the repetition in the classroom.
The student should be able to pass the Cambridge Preliminary English Test (PET) at about the end of stage five of the Callan Method. The First Certificate (FCE) is at about the level of the end of stage 10, and the Certificate in Advanced English is at the end of stage 12, which is when the Callan Method has been completed.
Many students around the world have used the Callan Method to help them to success in the Cambridge examinations.

Nursing OET Course at JEC

JET English College is pleased to present our OET course. This course is designed to help nurses learn the medical English that they will need to pass the OET (Occupational English Test).
As most of you know, in order to get a permanent residency in Australia you must pass a language test with a good enough score. Usually people take the IELTS test to prove that their English is satisfactory. In certain industries there is also the option of taking the OET. The OET is a test like IELTS that tests reading, listening, writing and speaking. Where the IELTS test is a general English test, the OET tests a persons language in the area where they work, for example the Medical OET tests a persons understanding of medical vocabulary and the sort of English that they would be expected to use in their job. This means that people can study the language that will be most useful to them in their career and also use this knowledge to be able to work in Australia.
Another advantage of the OET is that at this time a person only has to take the parts of the test that they need to. For example if a person takes the complete test and does very well in the reading, writing, and listening parts, but they do badly in the speaking part, they only have to retake the speaking part, not the whole test.
JEC’s OET course is held from Monday to Thursday between six and eight. It is taught by university lecturers and nurses who are very experienced with the medical system in Australia and who understand the problems that people face in learning English.

Hello all,

Big news, JET English College has recently been approved as an official TOEIC Public Testing Centre. This means that as well as teaching with the Callan Method we are also able to conduct the hugely popular TOEIC Test. This test is internationally recognised by many businesses and considered when people apply for a job where their English skills matter.

Many people use their year out in Australia for the purpose of developing their English, so that when they return to their own country they may be able to get a better job or improve their career. With the TOEIC test they can show employers their English level exactly.

To coincide with this JEC is also starting a TOEIC course to prepare candidates for the examination, these courses will run for two weeks prior to the exam and will prepare the students to take the TOEIC test.

The test dates and the course dates are as follows;

More than five million people take the TOEIC test each year, either for business purposes, or even just to find out how well their English is progressing. JEC is happy to be able to present this test.

Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year

Hello everyone, and I hope you all had a great Christmas.

Christmas in Sydney was hot and beautiful beach weather, and since then it has just got hotter. I have just come back into the office from the park where I sat sunbathing while eating my lunch.

JEC opened yesterday after being closed for two weeks over the holiday period so all of our teachers have come back refreshed and ready to go.

We had a party on the last day of term at the St James hotel before we all went our separate ways for the holiday.

It was also a good opportunity for us to get to know some of our new teachers a little better. They started teaching the Callan Method with us shortly before Christmas. It was good to see them out and to have the chance for us to have a drink with them.

It also gave us a chance for us to say goodbye to Chris Gysi who left us to go travelling and teaching around the world.

Chris was always a lot of fun, both in and out of the classroom and we are sorry to see him go and hope he has every success in the future.

I will give you a little bit more information about our new teachers the next time I write this blog.

Hello everyone,

Here we are nearly at the end of another year at JET English College.

It has been a good year and we have seen a lot of students and teachers come and go, but most importantly we have taught many people English using the Callan Method and helped them to improve their English, and enjoy their time in Sydney.

We have been busy and introduced the JEC business course that has been very useful to our students. This course can be done in the evening or night classes and is useful for people who are speaking English in a business environment, or just those who want to improve their understanding for more general purposes.

I spoke to Masaki about the business course when he finished it to ask him about what he thought of the course and this is what he had to say.

"I really enjoyed the business course because I learned a lot of idioms and language to make my life here easier. It was very intense, and it was a lot to do in five weeks, I wanted to study it for longer.

The language that I learned was very useful for my resume and also for finding a job. I thought that the course would be good for business, but I was surprised that it was so useful for my everyday life.

Now Masaki has finished with us we wish him all the best for the future.
I hope that all our students, old and new have a great Christmas wherever they are now.

New Teachers at JEC

Hello everybody.

I hope you are all well and happy.

We have been busy here and I think we are all looking forward to the weather warming up in Australia. It has been a cold winter, but now it is spring and it should start to get nicer soon.

A lot of us have been ill recently with colds so we definitely think that it is time for a change.

We have recently taken on several new teachers to help with the increased number of students.

As usual, Emma came up from Adelaide to train the new teachers and to teach them everything they needed to know about teaching with the Callan Method.

For the new teachers it is a very difficult time because there is a lot to learn very quickly and they have to work very hard to get ready to go into the classroom.

I remember when I started teaching the Callan Method that I was very nervous, but I was lucky because the students were very nice. It does not take long to become comfortable in the classroom and then you can relax a bit and enjoy teaching. There is still a lot to think about with all of the different students with different pronunciation problems, but it becomes a lot more natural.

Our teachers try to make teaching look easy, but there is a lot more to teaching than most realise. We want our students to just concentrate on learning.

Back again

Hi there everyone. I made it back from my holiday in one piece.

My wife and I had a lovely day for our wedding in England, the sky was clear and it was very warm. We had about 90 guests many of whom travelled from countries other than England. The wedding took place in a very old church in a small village called Heighington in the north of England. The church was built before the Norman invasion in 1066 so it was a beautiful place with a lot of history.

There were no problems with the wedding, my wife looked great in her dress, which was quite spectacular. I was wearing the full morning suit as is traditional.

After the wedding we went by Rolls Royce to Redworth Hall for the reception. This was a 14 century country house and again it was perfect for the day.

After the wedding we went to Thailand on honeymoon. We stayed in Bankok for 4 days and then had a week in Phuket. Thailand was nice and very hot and we got to see elephants, but we spent most of our time relaxing and enjoying ourselves by the pool with cocktails.

When we got back to Australia we had a shock because it was so cold!!!

It is good to be home to see all of our friends who were not able to come for the wedding.

At JEC everything went well while I was away, before I went we took on some new teachers who have been busy teaching the Callan Method and they are doing very well. In my next blog I will introduce them to you.

We have also started our new JEC Business English course. This started at the beginning of August and is very popular with the students that are studying it. They find it challenging but enjoyable and they think that they are learning a lot. We hope that this course will become as successful as our Callan Method courses.

As always I hope that all our old students around the world are happy and that they are still speaking English as much as they can.

John is going on holiday

Hello everybody,

Today is my last day at JET English College before I go back to the U.K to get married. I fly out tomorrow afternoon.

Today I was surprised by the staff here at JET, The lights went off, wedding music started playing and I got covered in tinsel!!!!!

The teachers and office staff had prepared a card for me and they had bought me some presents. The first present was some lottery tickets so I could start of my married life with money, but, unfortunately they were not winners!

They also got me a really nice digital photo frame for me to put the photos of our wedding day in. I have been wanting one for a long time and I think it will be perfect for all of the pictures of our big day.

It was a lovely surprise and I am sorry that all my friends here will not be able to come to the wedding. I will miss them there because I would like to share this day with them.

I will be returning to JEC in August after a honeymoon in Thailand and ready to begin my new life as a husband.

Many of you have met Karen and you know that I think she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. When I return I will post some photos of our day on this blog

Also some big news for JEC, we are introducing a new business English course. We have been developing this over the last few months and now we are ready to start teaching it. It is a course that teaches business language in a way that makes it easily understood.

We are very excited about this as it is new and different for us, and we hope that it will be as successful as our Callan Method courses. Our goal is to teach English quickly and effectively and this new course will do just that.

Congratulations Manabu and Rieko

I was very happy recently to learn that two of our old students have got married.

Manabu and Rieko met while they were both studying with the Callan Method at JET English College. After they went back to Japan they married.

All of our staff and teachers who remember them as students were very happy to hear the news, and we are glad to have been part of them meeting.

I am very pleased to know that they are both so happy and wish them every happiness in the future.

As I write this I am preparing to get married myself so I can understand what a big step it is and I hope that they will be happy forever.

We have been having a good time teaching The Callan Method to people since we opened our school in 2006.

In this time many of our students have taken what they learnt from The Callan Method and gone on travelling.

As our school has kept growing we have had to take on more teachers.

Hello everyone!
I hope that all our students, old and new are well.
Since we moved offices to Castlereagh St we have been very busy. (too busy to update this blog!!!) And a lot of things have changed about our school.
Firstly we have had to say goodbye to some teachers who have moved on to other things, and we have also had to welcome some new teachers. Our new teachers, trained by Emma, are now working hard in the classrooms and are teaching very well.
I will post some photos soon to introduce the new teachers and to let people know a little bit about them.
Also we have changed our timetable, so now we have classes running all day from 9 in the morning to 8 in the evening. We did this to give people more flexibility in the time they wanted to study.
Some things are stil the same, however and we still have a lot of our regular teachers, which our old students will remember well.
Tim Judge has just come back from doing a successful show at the Melbourne Comedy festival, and for three months over Christmas, Reuben was in the Phillipines doing volunteer work with refugees.
Now Sydney is starting to get a lot colder as the winter draws nearer, but at least it is a lot drier than it has been recently.

New Offices

JET ENGLISH COLLEGE HAS MOVED!

Last week was our first week in our new offices, there was a lot of setting up and a few small problems, but all of our students and teachers remembered the correct address!

The new school is much larger than our old premises on Market St and we have now got eight classrooms and a lot more space for students to study after class.

Congratulations to our nurses!

Congratulations are due to Mayumi Takemura, Rie Onodera and Rie Kurashima. We have been running a program in conjunction with Nightingale Nursing to give students the opportunity to work as nurses. These three have studied with the Callan Method to bring their English up to the required standard and then they have had to pass an interview with the agency to make sure that they would be capable. All of the girls worked very hard and they were all successful in ther interviews. Mayumi has been working since September and the two Ries will be starting working soon. So well done to all of them.

Hello everyone!
Well it has been a little while since I posted here, and what a lot of changes we have had since then. We have got bigger and bigger, and sadly we have had to say goodbye to some of our old teachers, but we have also had the pleasure of saying hello to many new ones (and an old face, see below!)
As the first school teaching the Callan Method in Sydney we have to make sure that the quality of our teaching remains the best and Emma, our teacher trainer worked very hard with our new teachers to make sure that they were good enough to stand next to our existing teachers.
We have had a lot of fun so far this year and are very pleased that our school now has a lot more Korean students. We have made many good friends over the year and we are looking forward to meeting many more when we move to our new larger premises.
This is a very exciting time for us and we are hope that when we move it will be a chance for us to continue to improve our service and to continue to help people to learn English in a fast fun way.

Tessa is back!!

Tessa has come ack to JET English College after six months travelling around the United Kingdom. While she was over in England Tess spent some time teaching at the Callan school in London, she said she had a great time over there and enjoyed the London school but she is glad to be back at JET.

JET English College is moving!!!!!!!!

In the last year JET English College has been very successful and has grown in size and reputation, now we are moving to a larger office so that we can have more classes.

This will mean that we are able to have a more comfortable area for our students and also that we will be able to have up to eight classes at the same time.

Many things about the school which people like will remain the same, but we need to move because it will mean that we will be able to provide a better service for our students.

We will be opening in our new offices on the 22nd of October.

Classes will continue as normal in our present offices until the 19th of October.

Of course we will miss the building that we are in now because we have had a very good time here and it saw the start of JET but now we need to move as we are getting too big for where we are now.

Hello everyone, well here we are at the end of our first year as a school teaching the Callan Method. It has been a great year and we have made some good friends along the way. So thanks to everyone who has helped to make our school successful. Don’t forget to check out our great specials that are part of our celebrations. And a big thank-you to all the teachers who have made JEC what it is today. John

This month as part of our Birthday celebrations we have decided to have an international day to introduce our school and the Callan method to new students. It will be held on the 16th of February and we would like our students to bring along their housemates and friends to our school to meet the staff and the teachers. We will be providing snacks and also giving some demonstration lessons. If a student enrols because of this then they will receive a discount on their course fees, and also the student who invited them will receive $100 CASHBACK!
So please invite your housemates and friends and come along to have a good time and to help us celebrate our birthday.
The party will begin at 4pm and people are welcome to bring along their own alcohol

Study Tips
With difficult sounds try to use your tongue to make bigger actions, this will help your pronunciation and also help to make your tongue stronger. As you improve you will learn that you can make the same sounds using smaller actions, but to begin it is good exercise!

The Wizard of Oz By L. Frank Baum.
This book was made into one of the most famous movies of all time. The book is a story about how everybody can be special and how if you believe in yourself then you can do anything. This is a good moral tale that has a message for everybody. It is also interesting to see how it is different to the film.

Our Christmas party was a great success, it was held at the Angel Hotel on the last day of term before Christmas, we had asked people to get dressed up for the occasion, and I am pleased to say that everybody made an effort and we all had a great time. We presented Angela with a bunch of flowers and a bottle of wine as it was to be her last pub night with us before she moved to Brisbane. We also had a raffle, the main prize which was a months tuition in the evening class was won by Tsutomu Aoki. So well done Tom and I hope that everyone that was there enjoyed it as much as I did.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

Our last pub night was on the 20th of September and as you can see from the photos we had a great time, although I have no idea what some of the people are doing in the pictures! We did not have one this month, as we were a little bit too busy, and needed to recover. However next month we are having a Christmas party on the 22nd of December at the Angel Hotel on Pitt St. It will start as usual at seven O’ clock. If you would like to come please put your name on the list when it goes up. Please come and celebrate the end of term with us.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a beautiful story about the life of a horse in England a hundred years ago. Then, horses were not treated very well and this book tries to teach people the best way to treat them. The book is written as if the horse is telling the story and it is sometimes funny and sometimes very sad.

STUDY TIPS

Listen to the way the teacher speaks and try to copy it. In English we use our voice a lot to make words stronger or to give emphasis. The more feeling you put into what you say, the more interesting your conversation will be. When you are watching television or a movie or just talking. Listen to which words are emphasised and how they are emphasised. Sometimes we make a word longer and sometimes we give a word a stronger accent. Try using different ways to see what works for you. Remember, everyone is different.

Hello there everybody,
I hope you all had a good weekend, I know I certainly did. We all went to the Angel on Friday for our monthly pub night. and as you can see from these photos we all had a great time. I was there with my girlfriend and Angela came with her husband, and Daniel, Rueben and Owen all made it. Everybody had a good time and it was good to see some new faces as well as some old friends. I'm not sure what was happening in most of these photos so if anybody knows then please leave a comment to explain it to me!!!!!

Hi there, hope you all had a good month, I know we did.
Once again we had to say goodbye to some old friends which is always sad, but also to welcome some new ones to the school, which is fun!
Thank you to everyone who got in touch after the last newsletter came out it was great to hear from you. It is always good to her from old students who have gone on to other things.

As you can see, we had a great time at the pubnight on 15th of September. Thanks to everyone who came along. It is you that makes these evenings really good fun. Also thanks to the teachers that came along and had a good time. The next pub night is on the 20th of September. (this Friday) so we hope to see you there.

Congratulation this month go to Angela who was voted the teacher of the month by the students.
In case you did not know when you fill in your questionaires there is a question about who you think teaches the Callan method the most professionally. These results are added up and the teacher with the most points is awarded teacher of the month and receives a bottle of wine. Here is Angela being presented with a bottle by Hiro.

Good books to read

The Famous Five by Enid Blyton
There are about thirty books in this series which tell about the adventures of four teenagers and their dog. These books are written in a very readable style and they can be found very cheaply in most second hand book shops.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
These stories are some of the first stories that any native speaker will hear. They are written simply in a style that is easily understood, but by reading them, you will also find out about some if the ideas and images that most native speakers share. Some of the stories are very famous and others are not but they are all interesting.

Congratulations to Shizuka

Congratulation are due to Shizuka Ushinohama, one of our youngest students whose team won the finals of the under twelves state titles in Dubbo recently. We all know that football is her main love in life, in fact I think the only reason she started learning English was so that she could understand her teammates!
We are all really proud of her and hope that she continues to be very successful.

Hello there,
Just a short message to let everyone know that the next pub night will be on the 20th of October at the Angel hotel. As usual we will be on the top floor and the evening will start at seven O' clock. Hope to see as many people there as possible. Please come along and bring your friends if you like. I (John) will be there and so will most of the teachers so it will be a good chance to practice your English and also to to have a chat with us outside the classroom.

Pub Night 15/08/06 Angel Hotel

Last Friday we all headed off to the Angel Hotel for the fourth of our popular Pub Nights. In case you don't know, I enjoy a drink and we thought it would be a good idea to have a night for all of the teachers and the students at a pub.
This gives the students the chance to have a chat to the teachers outside the classroom and also to meet new people and generally have a good time.
We had a good number of people show up, it seems that each one of these we do they get more popular. Of the teachers, John, Daniel, Angela, Tessa, Tim and Reuben came so there was plenty of opportunity for everybody to speak a lot of English and I think that everybody had a good time.
Here are a few photos of the evening, some are a little blurred but so were most of us by the end of the evening!!!

REUBEN'S BIRTHDAY

Last Friday was Reuben's Birthday, so to help him celebrate we got him a bottle of wine. We have been having a few birthdays here over the last few months. It has been his, Tim's and Aya's recently, but I won't embarrass everybody by telling you how old they really are!

Although Reuben has not been with us for very long he is settling in very well, as are Tim and Owen. They get on really well with the students and are becoming very popular.

Pub Night, Friday 15th September Angel Hotel Pitt St
As you know I never need an excuse to go to the pub, and this month is no different. We are going to the Angel pub on Pitt St (near Martin Place) on Friday the 15th of September. I will be there from seven o’clock. But if you cannot come at that time you can always come along later. If you would like to bring a friend, you can, but you do need to put their name on the list so we know how many people are coming. It will be a good night and a great opportunity for you to practise your English with the teachers outside of the lesson. There is no food available so it is a good idea to have something to eat before you come! I’ll see you there!

Good books to read.
Reading is one of the best ways to improve vocabulary and to improve your grammar, however many people try to read books that are to difficult for them and so feel bad because they cannot understand everything.
The best thing to do is to read books that are for children, this is how most native speakers learn when they are children. We do not start with books for adults when we are learning our language and neither should you.
There are a lot of very good books that you can find, here are some of my favourites that can be read with pleasure by both children and adults.

The Little Prince, by Antoine de St Exupery
This is a short story that you can find a different meaning in every time you read it; it looks simple but is actually very deep. But it is written in a style that is quite easy to understand.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl
This was one of my favourite books when I was young, and you may have seen the film with Johnny Depp. It is easy to read and a lot of fun. Most books by Roald Dahl are quite good, and he also has written for older readers in books like “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”

Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne
Forget Disney, these are some of the greatest stories in English, they were never written for children but instead for the child inside us all. These stories are loved by everyone.

Tessa recommends How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff, but I do not know too much about it, but if she says that it is good I am sure that it is!

With reading the best thing is to choose a book that is not too long, so that you do not get bored halfway through and want to give up, it is better to read shorter books that you can finish quickly, this means you will be able to read more. The best thing to do is to join a library, this is free and it means that you can read many books without having to pay for them. All you need to join a library is some identification and usually a letter with your name and address on it to prove where you live. Look on the internet to find where the nearest library to you is.

Horse riding
We would like to arrange a trip to go horse riding in October. We need to know how many people would be interested in going. Numbers will be very limited as we will have to arrange transport . If you are interested please let me know as soon as possible. Only the first people who speak to me will be able to go.
